Pondering Skinny Bass

Fisheries specialist Peter Schaefer examines a bass for body weight and parasites. Note the narrow tail of this 3-year-old bass, a sure sign of too many predators and/or not enough forage. Ask any pond owner. What are the major challenges you face in pond management? Invariably, the specter of skinny fish – aside from catching fish – ranks in the top five. Where the largemouth is the marquee species in aging and/or clear-water ponds, putting weight on skinny gamefish is especially tricky.
